Samsung Galaxy Nexus

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus was released as the first android device to come with the operating system Ice Cream Sandwich. But has the Galaxy Nexus focused solely on the operating system and left the hardware in the dark? Or has Samsung focused on more than just a new software overhaul for their dazzling new device.

The Nexus comes with an unusually sized 4.65” screen, showing off an attractive super AMOLED display. Like most of Samsung’s android phones, the Nexus follows a rather minimalistic approach, with a plain dark colour, and a pretty average design to the shape and weight. The device is a slight bit larger than the Galaxy S2, and feels a little weight in the hand, but it’s expected with such a large screen, and it feels very sturdy and secure in your hands.

Very similarly to many android devices released at the time, the front facing camera takes shots of up to 5Megapixels, and the front can record in 1.3Megapixels. The camera doesn’t produce the most pleasing results, which is a little shameful of such a premium device. Taking photos in good light conditions can produce reasonable results, but under dark conditions it’s a different story, the camera also seems quite bad at motion capturing, so don’t expect to film an action film on this thing. Still, the camera has got enough in it to take some decent photos of family and friends, but perhaps preparing the shot beforehand will be advisable to receive the best results.

Google’s third flagship phone is powered by a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, and it is a big offering for the Android system at the time of release in November 2011. The Processor is more than enough to power the device. The battery life of the Nexus is really pleasing, and it will probably last you about 17 hours of average use.

The Galaxy Nexus comes with an expected 1GB of RAM, and offers 16GB of storage. Unfortunately the Nexus does not have an SD card slot, which is a big downside for those who enjoy loading their device with their whole collection of music or movies.

16GB isn’t too bad though, and it’s more than enough to run the operating system and all the apps you could ever need.

The Galaxy Nexus’ main selling point at release date was its Android 4.0 operating system, and sleek user interface to accompany it. If you’ve used Android 4.0 before you’ll know that after getting to grips with the new system it outshines any predecessors, and it really feels like Android has evolved in a way that makes the system feel natural and is ready to place everything at our fingertips.

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus has done a great job of showing the world the power of Android 4.0, and lives up to our expectations of premium devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S2 and the iPhone 4S.
