Panasonic Eluga

Is that a Panasonic phone? What? Yes, Panasonic is best known for its’ cameras and other electronics such as TVs, but it seems they have now taken a step into the UK and US mobile industry with their new Panasonic Eluga. But what will Panasonic offer to make it stand out from the crowd?

The Panasonic is small and incredibly slim, with curved edges the handset is made very well, at only 103g, it’s one of the lightest handsets around, 10 grams lighter than the Galaxy S2, and it still feels sturdy and secure in our hands.

Apart from the beautifully crafted design of the handset, the device is also dust and water proof; we’ve learnt that when Panasonic say water proof, they mean water proof. Lots of images and videos on the web have shown the handset submerged under water and then being taken out in perfect condition after it has taken a quick wash. There have been issues with dust getting caught under the touchscreen with some phones, and Panasonic claims this will never be a problem again as well.

The Eluga has a micro SD slot, and 8GB of internal storage, along with 1GB RAM and a dual core 1GHz processor, a little less than some high end devices being released this year.

The Panasonic comes with a 4.3 inch OLED screen, and it’s great to see it on a handset with such a hand-friendly size, there are three touch sensitive buttons underneath the screen, and two physical buttons placed on the side of the device.

The camera is 8 Megapixels and can capture images at a moderate speed, the camera isn’t perfect under some light conditions, and it’s a disappointment that Panasonic haven’t taken

extra care to produce a great camera phone, as we’ve seen a lot of great digital cameras from them.

Panasonic has kindly not fiddled too much with stock bloat ware, or uncomfortable themes, leaving the UI feeling very clean and accessible, but strangely the device will ship with Android gingerbread 2.3, and the phone frame rate seems to lag behind at times, although Panasonic has promised us it will see an ice cream sandwich update a few months after release.

The device is currently predicted to sell for around £379, which is a bit disappointing for its specs and lack of software, hopefully we’ll see a lower price at actual release.
