Huawei Ascend D Quad

Huawei have got a lot to live up to if they plan on competing with the likes of Samsung and HTC, especially as the Ascend D Quad’s release date has been delayed till July. For Huawei to take a good percentage of the market, they’re going to have to stick tight to their promises of cheaper prices compared to the other high end handsets.

Regardless of price, let’s have a look at what Huawei’s new quad-core device has to offer.

Like other devices ready to be released this year, the Ascend D Quad has a 1.5 GHz quad-core processor, but unlike other brands, Huawei have decided to make their own ARM-based chip sets, which Huawei has claimed will run up to 50% faster than a Tegra 3 chip, which has been seen in the popular Asus Transformer Prime tablet. We’re being treated to 1GB of RAM, and a 4.5 inch screen, slightly less than Samsung’s and HTC’s additions to this year’s high end market. The screen itself is an LCD, with 720x1280 pixel resolution, with higher pixel density than even apple’s iPhone 4S.

The primary camera captures images in 8Megapixels; the camera works well under low light, and snaps shots at a lightning quick speed. Although it’s not at the top of the game, it definitely does its’ job well.

The design of the phone is rather lacking, at first glance, it looks almost identical to a galaxy nexus, with three touch capacitive buttons at the bottom, the only difference at a distance is the word ‘Huawei’ placed above the handsets’ screen. The handset casing is made of plastic, and feels a little cheap compared to other high end devices. Hopefully the saving costs of the cheap design, and their own manufactured chip set should bring the price down a bit for those wishing to purchase.

There’s been nothing special announced for Huawei’s software, it will run android’s ice cream sandwich like all other top end devices being released this year, and manages browsing through system quick and smoothly. It was quite a shock to how much heat the handset gave off whilst in moderate use, especially when Huawei have said a key aspect of this phone is the battery life. Compared to other high end devices, at first glance the D Quad appears a little mediocre, but we’ll have to wait for its’ release to hear more about its’ pricing, and any other features Huawei have hidden up their sleeve.

Also Huawei will be releasing a larger model named the Ascend D Quad XL, with a massive 2500mAh battery, it’ll be nice to see how long the battery lasts compared to other devices, and whether or not the handset will be too large and unsightly for those with smaller hands.
